Safe Demonstration and Learning of Self-defense Techniques
. . . Dr. Weng never wants a Distance Learning Program student to demonstrate or teach these techniques if the student only has the videotape as a reference

Tai-chi self-defense techniques in the videotapes, “Essence of Tai-chi”, “Cardio Tai-chi 101”, “Ch’ang style Tai-chi Chuan” or the book with the same title are for your references only. In the Dr. Weng’s Tai-chi Monkey System Distance Learning Program, students do not test for nor are expected to perform the self-defense techniques. Dr. Weng never wants a Distance Learning Program student to demonstrate or teach these techniques if the student only has the videotape as a reference.

Self-defense not only takes many months of training and skill, but it also takes great care and self-restraint when demonstrating on a training partner or student. If the student does not have the proper training in self-defense, then the student will incur a liability and only show a lack of skill that would give a poor impression about Tai-chi Chuan and the related techniques.

Although a student may have an extensive background in other Martial Arts, this would not necessarily qualify the student to demonstrate or teach the self-defense techniques. Dr. Weng recommends that all Tai-chi Chuan self-defense applications should be learned from a qualified instructor from our branch school teaching Dr. Weng’s Tai-chi Monkey System or from Dr. Weng’s Self-defense seminars and then taught only after receiving written permission to demonstrate or teach self-defense applications.
